Giveaway! Who Needs Boots?

September 9, 2011 | By | 23 Replies More

NOTE: This giveaway is done, winner announced here, thanks to all for participating!

Since you’re a Serious chicken chaser, we bet you’ve put some Serious miles on your boots. Maybe too many – meaning you haven’t taken the time to replace your old standbys with something new.

Why should you? Because new boots (many but not all – you get what you pay for) are pretty sophisticated. They’re light, comfy and high-tech. They help move sweat away from your feet, keep water out and cushion the pounding your feet get when you’re chasing birds.

Remember: You kill birds with your legs. There’s a direct relationship between how fit you are, or how long you can go, and how many birds you’ll see. Except maybe in some places in South Dakota….

Anyhow, the folks at Irish Setter – whose boots we wear and like – have given us a gift certificate for a new pair of 831 Upland DSS boots. These are the boots we wear. They rock.

To win this giveaway, all you have to do is tell us in 100 words or less below (as a comment to this post) or on Facebook why you (your feet) need these boots. Specifically why you as a Serious Bird Hunter need some Serious boots.

We’ll pick a winner and announce who it is next week – unless we don’t get enough entries, in which case we’ll announce it the week after.

If you win, we send you the gift cert from Irish Setter which you, Mr./Ms. Lucky, redeem with them. And then, after the season, let us know how you like the boots.

Have at it, and good luck!

I need a serious pair if boots for the serious outdoors trails and brush and muck and water that I trek through hunting, fishing, any outdoor activity. My boots take a beating like no other, and desperately in need of a serious all terrain rugged pair o boots that can take what I put em through.

I am a serious bird hunter and could definitely use some serious boots. I start hunting last year on a very tight budget. I was able to find a used pump shotgun and a hand-me-down vest. I spent many hours walking through the thick with them and an old pair of pack boots. Last season ended with many miles walked and only a handful of flushes to show for all my efforts. I didn’t even fire a single shot. I believe this year will be better since I read your book and I’m sure some serious boots would help too.

Burrs. Briars. Rain-soaked Dakota mud. Roosters flush. Legs burning. Swing on a pair. Watch both fall. Wait for flawless retrieves. Or Ruffed Grouse back home. The woods of northern Michigan. Dew dripping from quaking leaves. Aspens so thick it’s hard to see Zeus. He’s birdy. His tail swinging in full circles. Pushing through the brush. Face scratched. Hands bleeding. Zeus breaks left. Thunder from the right. A glimpse of a feathered rocket. A quick shot. Another retrieve. These are the moments I live for. I’m a serious bird hunter. I need boots that are driven to perform. Like me

  4. Irish Setter boots – SERIOUSLY, I absolutely NEED a new pair. My current favorite boots are pink camo colored Irish Setter Ladyhawk boots that have traveled from Idaho through Montana and Wyoming to the Dakotas, down to Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, and back again throughout Idaho multiple times. This pair of boots is super comfortable, keep my feet dry, are stable on slopes and scree, and are wearing out! I’ve been waiting for Irish Setter to make them in pink camo again – but alas, it still hasn’t happened. I’ve worn Danner, Browning, Cabelas Kangaroo, and other brands but nothing has been as comfortable and long lasting as my Irish Setters. My hubby swears by Irish Setters and has worn them for approx 30 years. I will hunt more than 60 days this fall and winter and trial approx 20 or so days. Comfortable, durable footwear is a necessity for this serious setter lover – and I’d love wear another pair with a setter on the side!

  5. Ric Oestreich says:

I have been a Red Wing customer for nearly 40 years. And recommend them highly. I use Irish Setters at work & in the field. In Northern Wisconsin you must have a comfortable and an all weather boot. Besides mine are getting worn after many years in the woods chasing Grouse & Woodcock. The quality is unmatched and the durability is second to none. I rest my case.

  6. Anthony Lynn says:

I’m a serious bird hunter who needs some serious boots because hunting birds in bare feet seriously sucks.

  7. Scott Quasius says:

Well to start, it’s my birthday. Second, my old pair of boots fell apart this summer and need to be replaced. I’ve worn the same pair of boots, Vasque, for the last eight years and loved them but would be up for trying something new this season. I’ve worn some insulated Irish Setters for outdoor work here in Wisconsin and enjoyed them and having a dedicated pair just for grouse hunting with my springer would be a great gift. No matter what’s on my feet, I’m looking forward to spending lots of time in the woods this fall.

being a diabetic the shoes you wear means alot to your feet , and i have not found a pair that can withstand what i put them through I upland hunt in a couple of state that have some mean switch grass and by the time the end of the day may feet are in bad shape all the boots i have tried is like me tearing up a anvle in a sand box , trust me i can do it , there is not a spot that i will not hunt just becuase i might damage my boot

  9. Kevin Schmersal says:

My need for some great boots is huge! I am 59 years old and disabled. Over the years, I have struggled to find a form of exercise that I can handle. Finally, last year, I started hunting again. I now have 2 wonderful Irish Setter bird dogs and will be out with them this fall on grouse. I need the support and quality construction that Irish Setter boots are know for. I am eager to return to the woods and fields of Maine in search of the Ruffed Grouse and plan to be out with my dogs every day this season. We are a serious bird hunting team. The dogs feet are all set….but I need some really good boots!

  10. Sanders says:

Are you looking for a retail sales person?

My grandfather hunted upland birds for about 50 years, and he always wore Red Wing 202’s. I’ve worked outdoors and hunted upland birds for almost two decades. I honestly wouldn’t recommend any of the expensive new boots that they have out now for hunting. I’d recommend a pair of Rubber Utility or Chore Knee boots that you can get for $18 to $32. Get them one size larger, so you can put a pair of insoles in them from your favorite running shoes.

Pick me for your Irish Setter boot salesperson!

  11. Jerry says:

I hunt grouse with my feet.

  12. Wes says:

Boot leather gets birds. I will start chasing prairie chickens in mid-September; Montana in October; woodcock in Missouri until quail and pheasant in Kansas and we’ll run that until January 31. As a weekend warrior, I put the miles on. With a puppy, this year will be exponential in that regard. We’ll put the wear on the tread for years to come.

  13. Ryan says:

“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.” – Henry David Thoreau. There has never been a more literal, yet truthful, statement made about feet. In the world of bird hunting good boots lead to a good hunting trip. Whether you are chasing chuckar, scanning for pheasant, searching for woodcock, or sitting in a duck blind, your boots need to hold up. If Mr. Thoreau was talking about bird hunting he might have said, “Heaven ON your feet, results in heaven above your head.” And we can all use a little more heaven in our lives!

  14. shawn meyer says:

The best pair of boots I ever had were thrown away like common trash, by my wife.A weeks before I had worn them hunting and got them alittle muddy.Along with the fact that they were a little tattered but in very comfortable broke in condition. She ended there short but full life.I was one hour befind the garbage truck and was too late to catch up with them.My two hour scavenger hunt for the trash wagon was in vain. The boots were history as should have been my wife.I am sure that the trash man wheres IRISH SETTERS NOW!!!!!!

  15. Scott Fitzgerald says:

Don’t pick me. I love my new Under Armour Speed Freak boots for grouse hunting! Hope you guys try them, and you’ll see what I mean.

  16. Vince Barrord says:

    I have incriminating photos…

  17. Wehaf says:

I don’t need new boots, but my boyfriend does. He doesn’t have any right now, so when we take weekend hikes he is at a serious disadvantage!

  18. Brian Derrick says:

I bought a new pair of Danner sharptails and they are junK. I need a new pair boots and I was not planning on buying them this year.

  19. Erik says:

I have yet to actually own a real pair of hunting boots – I am still nursing through a pair of vasque hiking boots that I got second hand. i honestly have never found something quite comfortable enough. I wish I had some amazing story with which to sway favor, but that’s it.

  20. Amy Lawson says:

Ten years ago, when my boyfriend proposed, I looked him square in the eye and said, “Yes. But no guns in the house. Ever.”
He looked right back at me, nodded his head and said, “Okay.”
When he agreed, I thought I was the most amazing woman on the planet. “Wow,” I thought, “he just chose me over bird hunting.”
The truth is, he didn’t chose me over hunting–he outsmarted me. He knew, and was willing to bet his guns, that eventually I’d come around.
Ten years, two kids, one 12 gauge , and a bird dog later, I guess you can say I’ve seen the light.
Now all I need is a nice pair of boots…

  21. Joe Ertl says:

    c’mon

    Give me them boots!

I got a fever and the only prescription is new hunting boots!

  22. Kevin says:

I don’t need a pair of boots, but my son does. We went woodcock hunting last Saturday on the season opener, me in my well worn but serviceable Red Wing boots and him in an old pair of tennis shoes. Despite my feet being warm and dry, he out shot me even though he lost part of the sole of his tennis shoe half way through the hunt. He was so happy he didn’t even care!

  23. Ed Courtemarche says:

I go through a pair of boots every year as I hunt Grouse and Woodcock in New Hampshire, Vermont and Ontario, Canada. I have had many pair of boots that I liked but never a pair of Irish Setter Wingshooters. If I win the boots I will give them the best test they could possibly get because you see I am retired and spend 3 months hunting Grouse behind my English Setter. I know my dog went over 700 miles last year (Astro 220 keeps track) but I do not know how many I went. Lets see if they are as good as Serious Bird Hunting says they are. Yes I did read the book and liked it very much.
