Here are some bird-hunting books we’ve read and like, with short reviews about each one. If you’ve read them too, or can recommend others, please leave your comments or contact us. LINK
Grouse
The Big 3
The “Big 3″ grouse authors are John Alden Knight (the Godfather), William Harnden Foster and George Bird Evans. Unfortunately, all of their books are, we believe, now out of print and are only available in limited quantities. So they are more expensive than most books, but are well worth the money – just like this book. Following are the Big 3 books we referenced:
Ruffed Grouse
John Alden Knight
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1947
New England Grouse Shooting
William Harnden Foster
Charles Scribners’s Sons, 1942 and 1970
The Upland Shooting Life
George Bird Evans
Alfred A. Knopf, 1971
Frank
Just below those titans is Frank Woolner, a heck of a writer whom we wish wrote more about grouse. His woodcock books are great too.
Grouse and Grouse Hunting
Frank Woolner
Crown Publishers, 1970
Gordon
Gordon Gullion was one of the most-knowledgeable ruffed grouse biologists on the planet until his death in 1991. His research is very Great Lakes states-centric, but is widely applicable.
The Ruffed Grouse
Gordon Gullion
NorthWord Press, 1989
Other Authors
Here are three more-contemporary (still 15-20+ years old!) books. Every book has something to offer, but we particularly like Dennis Walrod’s book.
Grouse Hunter’s Guide
Dennis Walrod
Stackpole Books, 1985
The Grouse Hunter’s Almanac
Chris Dorsey
Voyageur Press, 1990
Grouse and Woodcock: A Gunner’s Guide
Don L. Johnson
Krause Publications, 1995
