IA: Hatchery Pheasants Okay

July 7, 2010 | By | Reply More

In response to declining numbers of wild pheasants, Iowa has a new rule that allows some folks to to release on their own land pheasants from hatcheries approved by the Iowa DNR.

The Chicago Tribune quoted Dale Garner of the Iowa DNR saying that “research shows pen-raised birds have a history of poor survival. He says it is important to put these birds where there is good habitat available to give them a chance.” (For more on why stocking doesn’t help much, take a look at this page from the MN Pheasants Forever website.)

DNR-approved hatcheries are: Hoovers Hatchery in Rudd; Murray McMurray Hatchery in Webster City; and Malloy Gamebirds in State Center.
