ND Ruffies May Be Up But…

Don’t know why the Associated Press is covering ruffed grouse, but a few news outlets picked up an AP article about North Dakota ruffed grouse populations looking good. But there are a few buts:

> This is based on drumming counts, which don’t exactly correlate to fall hunting.

> The increase isn’t that stellar, and…

> …there aren’t a whole lot of ruffies there.

But they’re there, and if you’re Serious….

Here are some excerpts from the article:

> “The spring survey indicated a 10% population increase statewide from 2009.”

> “The state is probably approaching the high end of the cycle for bird numbers.”

> “The highs are not as high as they once were, while the lows seem to get lower.” [Cut some trees!]

> Last year, a 37% increase in hunters [good!] did not correlate to more birds in the bag, as the total harvest fell nearly 11% from 2008, to just over 1,900 grouse.” [Practice your mount a little more, fellas!]
