As posted waaay back on Nov. 29, Wood & Metal decided to give away two pairs of its custom-made-by-Geier Glove Co. goatskin gloves to a couple Serious hunters. We found it a bit odd that so few folks entered, but hey, if that means you’re happy with your gloves, great.

Then again, as Jay said in his review of these schweet gloves, maybe you don’t know what you’re missing:

I was never happy with my gloves. But that didn’t bother me. Didn’t know you could be happy with gloves, and Brendan was in the same boat. They were just tools, things you had to have on your hands.

Well, I’m here to tell you that has changed for me. These American-made, sold-by-size, leather gloves have opened my eyes. They’re so comfortable I didn’t want to take them off – seriously! I couldn’t believe it either.

The Winnahs

First, thanks to all the folks who entered. The stories are great, as are the people in this wonderful upland world. Now to the winnahs of the goatskins:

Steve Conley, from SBH on Facebook

I am a fifth generation upland hunter instructed by my father and grandfather. My grandfather passed away years ago, but my father is still hunting quail and pheasants with me each year in the fields that are available to hunt as did the generations before me.

My father is a modest man that has always put his family first. He does not provide himself with many luxuries, typically driving the same car or truck for 20 years or more. He has worked at helping others his entire adult life, working with children that have learning disabilities and currently as a case manager coordinating community services for adults with developmental disabilities. He does this work because it is rewarding and as he says, “It’s my way of giving back.”

He has never owned a pair of shooting gloves and prefers instead to use work gloves that get more use around the yard. I can’t think of anyone that would be more grateful and pleasantly surprised in receiving a pair of great Geier gloves.

E Dudley, from SBH.com

I lost two important things in my life on Sept. 30 of this year. While I was at work, my Brittany decided to leave the yard to start the hunting season a day early. Unfortunately he met an untimely end while crossing a nearby road.

Tucker was a wonderful companion and had become a very good hunting dog. He had formed an attachment to my hunting gloves as a pup and would often find one of them and bring it to me signaling that he was interested in some time in the woods. The gloves were laid to rest with him along with some other favorite items of his on that fateful day. He is sorely missed.

We’re sure you’ll agree those are two stories that a) merit being chosen and b) are fitting for the season.

For Warm Hands

Several folks who entered this contest mentioned battling cold hands/needing warm gloves. The goatskin gloves in the giveaway are unlined, and thus would not be the best fit for your needs.

But what just might be the ultimate gold-weather birding gloves are the merino-wool-lined kangaroo-leather gloves made by Geier exclusively for Wood & Metal.

They’re simply…awesome. To his wife’s disgust, Jay keeps his bird-blood-stained merino kangaroos in the hallway winter glove basket along with the rest of the family’s stuff just because they fit and feel so great, and of course keep his hands warm.

As we’ve said many times, we’re huge fans of merino wool and for good reason. It basically has all the properties you could wish in anything whose purpose is to keep you warm. (In in case you’re unfamiliar with merino, there’s no itch.)

Yes, the merino kangaroos are pricey at $110/pair, but it’s the ol’ you get what you pay for….
